Cutting Through the Noise: Core Principles for Authentic Mental Wellbeing

Conversations about mental health have exploded in recent years. And it’s done a lot of harm.

Even with the best intentions, some mental health dialogues can overcorrect and present an incomplete picture. While it's important to normalize difficult feelings, true mental wellness requires cultivating resilience, self-awareness, and the courage to face challenges.

The popularization of terms like "mental health day" has sometimes reduced the concept of mental health to simply feeling bad. This overlooks the deeper, more nuanced realities of the human emotional experience.

While some recent mental health dialogues may overcorrect or present an incomplete view, they reflect an important cultural shift—normalizing emotional struggles and extending compassion during difficult times.

As vital as this transition is, true mental wellness requires focusing on enduring principles that foster resilience and growth.

Here’s what I know will always be true about mental health:

  1. Healing happens in relationships, and community support amplifies healing. Even if we can’t erase the pain, it helps to share it. Especially when it feels the hardest to share it.

  2. Self-awareness is key to personal growth. Understanding your own emotions, triggers, and behavioral patterns is the foundation upon which healing and growth are built.

  3. Bad things will happen, and we can heal from them. If someone tells you nothing bad will ever happen, they’re likely selling you something (it might be the worldview rather than a product).

  4. Science is the best tool we have for testing claims about health and wellbeing. You should listen to your intuition. You should also be ready to update your beliefs based on new evidence.

  5. A good life isn’t a life without suffering. It’s a life where you have something worth suffering for.

  6. Resilience is built through overcoming challenges, not avoiding them. Every obstacle overcome is a step towards greater mental strength.
